Tom Banas, MD, MS, who was named medical director of the Rehabilitation Hospital of Fort Wayne Jan. 1, has many exciting plans for the facility.

"The Rehab Hospital should be the marquee facility for rehab services in the region," said Dr. Banas. "My goal is to make The Rehab Hospital the first place people turn when they need help with any type of rehab service."

Dr. Banas is ready to begin focusing on the next step -- growing and enhancing programs. Providing excellent patient care is always of foremost importance, but Dr. Banas also stresses the value of enhancing programs for caregivers.

"It's extremely important to educate caregivers so they have the strategies needed to care for their loved ones," said Dr. Banas. "The family plays a key role throughout the rehab process, so it's important every family member knows what to expect and how to perform various tasks."

A Michigan native, Dr. Banas will split his time between Fort Wayne Neurology, where he has been practicing for 19 years, and his duties at the hospital.

"The Fort Wayne community has some great rehab facilities and a lot of good therapists," said Dr. Banas. "But Rehab Hospital, with its excellent staff, must be the beacon for rehabilitation services in the region.

"Where we are and our vision for where we want to be is clear," Dr. Banas continued. "Now we just have to continue doing what we do best while stepping outside the box when necessary to help ensure Rehab Hospital is the hospital of choice in the region for rehab services."
